You’ll begin with the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Photography, awarded by Pearson Education - a respected and internationally recognised qualification. This immersive course represents 2,400 hours of learning and carries 240 academic credits, giving you the equivalent of two years of university-level study.
From there, you’ll progress to the final stage - the BA (Hons) Level 6 top-up in Photography, which is validated, quality assured and awarded through the University of Hertfordshire. This final year represents 1,200 hours and 120 credits, completing the standard 360-credit university degree. With entry points in September, January, and May, it’s easy to step in when the time is right for you.

In this programme, you will develop a specialised knowledge of Photography. You will work closely with a team of subject specialist tutors who will help you to develop advanced academic abilities and a sophisticated professional practice. Throughout your studies, your tutors will provide support, guidance and feedback to allow you to progress in your studies, build an independent practice or pursue a career in the industry. Designed around practical assignments that are delivered through distinct topic modules, this degree programme will provide an academic structure to your studies. It will help you to establish your own reputation and distinctive approach to photography.
As a Home Study student, you will have full access to our Online Learning Centre. This is your virtual campus and contains all your course content, learning resources, access to online learning services, tutor support and assessment materials. You will also have access to our popular student forum, where tutors and students engage in discussion about course assignments, and share work and feedback.
The programme is aligned with statutory body requirements, such as the QAA Quality Code, QAA Subject Benchmarks, the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ), and Advance HE principles, ensuring an academically rigorous and professionally relevant learning experience. It also adheres to the Herts Learning Approach, (University of Hertfordshire) which emphasises active learning, inclusivity, and a supportive learning community.
This degree pathway represents 3600 learning hours, which is the equivalent of 3 years’ full-time learning (at 30 hours per week) or 6 years’ part-time learning (at 15 hours per week). Our faculty work throughout the year to support you with your studies, so you can dictate whatever pace you wish for your Higher National Diploma. The Top-up Degree portion is staged in 4 modules each taking six months to complete.

The lesson also encourages students to plan their study time and begins building the foundation for confident photographic practice.

This lesson deepens students' understanding of the professional photography workflow, reinforcing and expanding on the foundational concepts introduced earlier. Learners explore workflows, emphasizing adaptability and key planning decisions. The importance of maintaining a visual diary and using Harvard referencing is introduced, alongside project planning phases: pre-production, production, and post-production. Students examine professional research methods, location scouting techniques, and aspects to consider when planning a photoshoot. Reflection prompts throughout encourage self-assessment and skill development. The lesson concludes with guidance on post-production considerations, including file management, backups, and file formats, helping students build a solid, professional workflow mindset.

This lesson introduces students to the exposure triangle, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, exploring their relationship and common challenges when experimenting with exposure. Learners examine how exposure, focus, and composition work together to achieve technical and creative control across genres. Key compositional principles and rules are explained, alongside an introduction to depth of field through practical examples. The lesson prepares students for their next assignment by discussing photographic genres, including portraiture, photojournalism, and still life. Self-assessment tools include scenario-based MCQs and reflection prompts, encouraging students to evaluate their understanding and build confidence in applying core technical and visual principles.

This lesson explores the "Day in the Life" project as a practical framework for integrating research, technical skills, and creative storytelling. Students will also learn how image selection and self-reflection can affect the final project. Students reflect critically on their creative process, positioning their work in a professional context and articulating its relationship to historical, cultural, and industry precedents. - Module 1 - Advanced Practice
The aim of this module is to provide you with the skills and intellectual framework necessary to explore conceptual and experimental areas of contemporary photography. Throughout the module, you will engage in a process-driven approach to photography, investigating diverse themes, techniques, and perspectives that challenge conventional photographic practices. You will be encouraged to experiment with new ideas, materials, and methods, exploring the boundaries of photography as an art form and a means of personal or social expression. This may involve working with analog processes, digital manipulation, mixed media, or installation, allowing you to develop a unique visual language. The module emphasises creative freedom and risk-taking, encouraging you to question norms, explore conceptual approaches, and develop a critical voice within your work. This module will guide you not only in technical mastery of your chosen methods but also in reflective and critical thinking. By the end of the module, you will have created a high-standard portfolio, gained insights into emerging trends and techniques, and built the confidence to explore new conceptual areas independently. You’ll leave with an expanded understanding of photography's potential to communicate complex ideas and evoke powerful responses.

- Module 2 - Dissertation
This module allows you to undertake a substantial piece of research into a subject or genre of your choice in the area of photography. The chosen topic or genre should be of particular interest to you and allow you the scope to undertake meaningful research. The subject of the dissertation will be agreed with a tutor prior to starting, and you will be encouraged to link the research with the major project.

- Module 3 - Major Project Ideation and Development
You are encouraged to use this module as an opportunity to create a body of work that is representative of your specific area of interest and career goals. In consultation with your tutor, you will choose a theme and subject for your study. The research that was undertaken in the dissertation should inform and underpin the chosen subject. You are encouraged to embrace your artistic and creative abilities and to push the boundaries of conventional photography. A visual diary will map the progress of your study, and a publication of work will be the final output.

- Module 4 - Major Project Implementation
This module allows students to implement their project through one of two options: 1) an exhibition or 2) a publication in book form. Both pathways encourage students to explore the relationship between creative work and its presentation, focusing on how artistic intentions align with audience perception and impact. Whether coordinating an exhibition or producing a professionally styled book, students will enhance their leadership and management skills as they design and execute their chosen format. This practical experience builds organisational skills and confidence in presenting work publicly, whether in physical or digital formats. Collaboration is integral, with students engaging stakeholders to support their exhibition or book project. This teamwork cultivates a network of industry contacts and enhances their professional readiness. Through their chosen format, students can reach a defined audience, opening avenues for constructive feedback, networking, and professional growth. Reflective practice is emphasised, as students actively seek feedback on their work and evaluate their creative and managerial approaches.
